I went to the nearest Nordstrom tonight to return the Topshop dresses that didn’t work for me. The mall in general seemed pretty quiet, but I got two shocks when I took a quick walk through.

First, the JCrew is closing. I haven’t bothered looking in there much in the last couple of years because their fits don’t work well for me, and I had heard they had some store closings planned,
but I admit I was surprised to see this.

Then I round the corner and see this — giant clearance signs all over Lord & Taylor. Our location of L&T is closing as well — April 15 if not sooner, according to the SA I spoke with. That was a big shock — I actually like that store, way more than the Macy’s in the same mall, which is overstuffed and always seems at least a season or two behind the trends.

This has me wondering what is becoming of shopping malls. If this one tanks, it’s a biggish mall for the area. They added a whole wing onto it about 7-8 years ago, so to see it decline now is pretty alarming.

Well, the good news is that’s one less store where I’ll spend money this year.

Anyone else seeing this happening?
