PORT ST. LUCIE — An accused burglar was arrested after a homeowner on Sunday reported holding the man at gunpoint, a police report states.

Jorge Bruno Lopes, 42, was jailed on charges of burglary to an unoccupied structure and criminal mischief after the incident at a residence in the 600 block of Northwest Fairhaven Drive.

The 44-year-old homeowner told investigators he saw a light in his shed and the door was ajar. He first thought it was a family member and called out, but got no response.

He got suspicious that a person was breaking in his shed, and went back inside and got his Glock 9mm handgun.

“He then approached the shed, with his firearm at his side, and the defendant came out with a small handheld power drill above his head,” a police report states.

The homeowner told police the man yelled at him, and the homeowner reported he thought he was going to be attacked. The homeowner pointed his handgun at the man, later identified as Lopes, and told him to get on the ground.

"Don't shoot me," Lopes is quoted as saying.

Police found a tape measure, coins, WD-40 and a charger that belonged to the homeowner, the report states.

Lopes told police he burglarized the shed, but other details of his conversation with police weren’t released.

The home where the incident occurred is near Northwest Bayshore Boulevard and Northwest Selvitz Road, east of Florida’s Turnpike. Lopes' listed address is about five miles away from the home where the incident occurred.

Master Sgt. Frank Sabol, police spokesman, on Monday said calling 911 is always suggested, but everyone has a right to defend themselves and their property.

“We do not see that the homeowner did anything wrong,” Sabol said.

Police reported Lopes pried open the shed door, perhaps with the drill, and damaged the door.

Lopes, of the 200 block of Southwest Pagoda Terrace in Port St. Lucie, was held Monday in the St. Lucie County jail on $10,000 bail, a jail official said.
